Happy World Parrot Day

World Parrot Day was founded in 2004 by the World Parrot Trust to raise awareness about the perils these magnificent birds face. Unfortunately, parrots are some of the most threatened birds on the planet. Habitat loss, fragmentation, climate change, predation by non-native species and wildlife trafficking for the pet trade are some of the biggest threats these birds encounter. World Parrot Day began to highlight these dangers to educate the public so people will be motivated to take action to help save these beautiful birds.

How to Help

  • Adopt, don’t shop! Adopt a parrot from a local sanctuary or rescue. Sanctuaries are filled with parrots that need loving homes. By adopting, you are giving a bird a second chance. Also, you are helping by not supporting the pet trade.

  • Do your research. Adopting a parrot is a BIG responsibility. Make sure you are capable of giving a bird the correct care it needs before you bring it home. This includes proper nutrition, safety considerations, plenty of time outside of the cage, and regular veterinary care. Some parrots can live up to 80 years so it is important to have a plan for a responsible party to take them in case something should happen to you. Also remember, these are extremely intelligent, emotional animals. They can develop habits like feather plucking and other self-destructive behaviors if they do not get the attention and intellectual stimulation they need. It is up to you to provide a safe and healthy home for your bird.

  • Support Parrot conservation. World Parrot Trust and American Bird Conservancy do excellent work in regard to parrot conservation. Consider becoming a member or donating to help support their work.
